We received this note and photos from the Barkers.

Aiken County Habitat for Humanity was a part of the Midland Valley Christmas Parade this year.  On the float were homeowner, Robyn Fonce and her children, Riley, Kelli and Kendal.  Also on the float were some friends, Julia and Eric.  Thank you to John Overstreet for lending us his truck and trailer and to Rudy Castillo for driving and to everyone who helped.   We received second place in the general float category.  It was tons of fun.

For the Aiken parade, homeowner, Sabrina Lockett and her children, Taylionte, Terrell and Tyquan were on the float.

A message from the Executive Director

Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas

We are now entering the holiday season when we can reflect upon the blessings we have received during the year.  Like many of you, Habitat is experiencing the repercussions of the economic recession.  However, we are making the most of a bad situation and are managing to maintain the number of houses we build each year.  This year five new low-income families became homeowners for the first time.  They have moved into their new homes that are energy efficient and are enjoying family life that they can easily afford.  For this we at Habitat are thankful.

In addition, Aiken County Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) is working closely with other organizations and institutuions to improve the neighborhoods in our community.  One example is the City of Aiken and its Crosland Park initiative.  Habitat is in partnership with both the city and the students of USCA and Aiken Tech in building sheds for each house that is renovated in Crosland Park.  So far we have completed 21 sheds.  This initiative has saved the city money and improves the property in the Crosland Park community.  For this we are thankful.

Habitat is about people.  Yes, we build houses for qualified homeowner applicants, but we do this for those people who have low income and are in need of decent and affordable housing.  We are about people, because most of everything we do is done by volunteers.  Volunteers are vital to the work of Habitat and we depend on them to fulfill the mission of our affiliate.  For the homeowners and the volunteers, Habitat is very thankful.

This holiday season is also about people ... those who belong to our families, and who are our friends and colleagues.  It is a time to share with people something of ourselves, and a time of giving and being thankful for the blessings we have received.  More importantly, it is a time to re-establish our relationship with Jesus Christ who God has given to us for our salvation and eternal well being.

Have a Happy Thansgiving and a Merry Christmas.
